Home Escape Plan

A fire can double in size every 60 seconds. In the event of a fire, every second counts. Being prepared is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones. Practice now—before an emergency happens.

Creating and practicing a home escape plan ensures everyone in your household knows exactly what to do and where to go if a fire occurs.

Build your plan

  • Draw a floor plan of your home showing all doors and windows
  • Identify two exits from every room, if possible
  • Make sure all windows and doors open easily
  • Decide on a safe meeting place outside—like a tree, mailbox, or neighbour’s driveway

Practice your plan

  • Practice your escape plan twice a year, including during the day and at night
  • Ensure children, seniors, and those with mobility challenges can get out safely
  • Teach everyone to stay low to avoid smoke and check doors for heat before opening
  • Once outside, stay out – never go back into a burning building

Additional tips

  • Always keep hallways and exits clear of clutter
  • If you live in an apartment, know your building’s evacuation plan
