Firefighter recruits undergo 10 weekends of training in their first year with the department to obtain National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Level 2 and NFPA 1072 Level 2 certifications. This training covers both theoretical and practical skills related to responding to fires, motor-vehicle collisions, medical calls, and hazardous materials incidents.
In addition to this initial training, firefighters participate in 48 training sessions and 12 equipment maintenance sessions each year. Each session lasts 2 hours, and firefighters are required to attend at least 75% of all training and maintenance sessions. The training topics vary but include personal protective equipment refresher training, hose deployment techniques, ice water rescue training, first aid, hazardous materials response, and fire ground operations.
There are opportunities for advanced training in areas such as elevator rescue, surface water rescue, and automobile extraction techniques.
Firefighters carry a pager that alerts them to respond to emergencies at the fire hall.
